What is the reason of F/A-18 being so fast?!

Two Hawks (birds, not Lead-In Fighters) are sitting in their nests when an F/A-18 flies over on full afterburner.
“Wow, what speed!” says one. The reply comes,
“You’d fly that fast too, if your tail was on fire!”
