If this is where my tax dollars are going…

Then I am totally cool with it!

The sound when they turned around and coming in for the second time… Eargasm…

The A-10 Thunderbolt II, affectionately known as the “Warthog,” is a legendary aircraft renowned for its rugged design and ground-attack capabilities. Developed by Fairchild-Republic in the 1970s, this close air support (CAS) aircraft has earned a special place in the hearts of both military personnel and aviation enthusiasts.

The A-10’s most distinctive feature is its massive 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun, which is the heaviest automatic cannon ever mounted on an aircraft. This cannon is purpose-built to deliver devastating firepower against armored vehicles and ground targets, making the A-10 a fearsome adversary on the battlefield.

Designed to withstand significant battle damage, the A-10 is often celebrated for its robust construction, including redundant systems and protective armor around the cockpit and vital components. This toughness has earned it the nickname “Warthog” due to its somewhat ungainly appearance.

Despite its rugged exterior, the A-10 is a nimble and highly effective CAS aircraft. Its low-speed maneuverability and ability to fly at low altitudes allow it to precisely target and engage enemy forces in close proximity to friendly troops. This has made it a crucial asset in numerous conflicts, including Desert Storm, where it played a pivotal role in destroying enemy tanks and protecting coalition forces.

The A-10’s enduring popularity stems from its remarkable combat record, legendary durability, and its unique mission as a CAS aircraft. While newer aircraft have entered service over the years, the A-10 continues to serve the United States Air Force, demonstrating its enduring value in modern warfare. Whether it’s providing support to troops on the ground or engaging armored columns, the A-10 Thunderbolt II remains a symbol of rugged reliability and battlefield effectiveness.

A few years ago we were at the Reading, PA airshow on D–Day weekend. They do all sorts of re-enacting, including a ‘battle’ for a French Village. During this, we noticed all the local air traffic paused, and then there was a sound from the sky and two A-10s made a couple low-level passes at the ‘Village’. I’ll tell you that was one exciting moment!
