This beautiful 1944 DC-3 from Enterprise Airlines is actually a turboprop, after being modified by Basler Turbo Conversions.

In October 2002 it was damaged in a windstorm at Patriot Hills Base Camp in Antarctica.

A year and a half later it was repaired and flown out by Cox Aviation.

A similar rescue was preformed in Iceland in the year 1951 when a C47 equipped with skis after being abandoned on Icelands biggest glacier for, the Vatnajökull – glacier ofr more than a year after it could not take off from the glaciers surface. The reason for this all was an attempt to save the personnel of a C54 cargo plane, which had crash-landed on the glacier. Happily all the personnel was rescued by a ski team from Akureyri in northern Iceland.
