The Oxford English Dictionary, along with several other sources, names both noted aviator Horace Shortt and a certain Lieutenant A. D. Cunningham as possible sources. Cunningham supposedly flicked his thumb against a blimp’s inflated surface, producing a noise which sounded like “blimp,” whereupon Cunningham dubbed the craft “a blimp.”
