What a wicked sound!

Crank up your sound system and listen to the whistle…

The Vought F4U Corsair, one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history, boasts not only a storied combat record but also an interesting history behind its nickname.

Aviation enthusiasts and professionals often wonder how this remarkable fighter plane acquired the moniker “Whistling Death” and “Bent-Wing Bird.”

The nickname “Whistling Death” originated from the eerie sound the Corsair produced during high-speed dives. The Corsair’s wing had a distinct design with a gull wing shape and an inverted gull wing. As the aircraft dove at high speeds, the airflow over the wing’s leading edge would produce a distinct, high-pitched whistling sound. This sound struck fear into the hearts of enemy pilots and ground forces, as it signaled the arrival of the Corsair, ready to deliver its deadly payload.

The nickname “Whistling Death” served as both a testament to the Corsair’s speed and lethality. Its appearance and sound became synonymous with impending destruction, striking fear into its adversaries.

Today, the Vought F4U Corsair is celebrated as a symbol of World War II aviation excellence. Its nicknames, “Whistling Death” and “Bent-Wing Bird,” continue to resonate with aviation enthusiasts and professionals alike, capturing the essence of this legendary aircraft.
