“In the year 2054, the entire defence budget will purchase just one aircraft. This aircraft will have to be shared by the Air Force and Navy 3½ days each per week except for leap year, when it will be made available to the Marines for the extra day.”

The AF and Navy need to think about how fast they’re moving along with new aircraft. A 20-year service life back in the early days of combat aviation was not heard of, but now a 20-year service should be considered mid-life or near mid-life.

Look at the B-52, it was adapted from an all-nuclear role in the 50s, to a conventional bomber in the 60s and 70s, and now to a load-flexible heavy support platform in the late 20th and early 21st century. The design is 50 years old, and the USAF has no set retirement date for this beast.
