Why is it that student pilots are being taught to fly traffic patterns that would be too large for even a Boeing 777?

Huge patterns also run up unnecessary HOBs time, which equate to more aircratf rental time.

I agree. Two mile patterns are ridiculously wide. 3400 flight hours ago my flight instructor drilled into me to fly a pattern tight enough that I could make the runway if I lost power. For my m20j Mooney that means a 3/4 mile pattern.
